Manduessedum

Manduessedum was a Roman fort settlement in modern day Warwickshire in England.

The fort was founded in around c AD 50-AD 60 on the Watling Street Roman road. The final battle between the rebel queen of the Britons Boudica at the Battle of Watling Street may have taken place near Manduessedum. The British forces were defeated by the Roman general Suetonius Paullinus.

Manduessedum developed into a civilian settlement and was the centre of a pottery making industry. Up to 30 kilns dating from the Roman period have been found in the area.

The modern village of Mancetter near the town of Atherstone is built upon the site of Manduessedum.

I have just started researching the “Hodgkins” family who lived in Chapel End and Hartshill. The family home in about 1917 onwards was The Hayes, Church Road Hartshill after living in Chapel End near the congregational church. I have lots of family names and names of people living in Chapel End. Any info would be useful. Does anyone have info re. a train accident in Arley tunnel, maybe in the late 188o’s. My great grand mother had the single name Mary/Polly Daft. I cannot locate any information of my grandmother whose birth name was Alice Garbutt or Garbett born about 1888 in Stockingford who maybe had a sister Mary Ann and a half sister Hannah Day?? Any help or information would be most welcome, I have lots of names but cannot put them in any sort of order. Thank you
