I too have been tracing my roots and found links with the hatters..

In the 1881 census my great great grandfather Thomas Hales (a colliery clerk) & family were living in Long Street Atherstone (near Gisbourne Yard). His two daughters aged 17 & 19 were felt hat trimmers. Thomas’s son Henry John (my great grandfather) married in 1889 and his occupation is stated as a Felt Hatter.

In the 1901 census Henry is still a Felt Hatter and his father Thomas is now 62 years old and a Felt Hatters Timekeeper. Thomas ‘s two daughters (Henry’s sisters) now 37 & 39 are still single & living with their parents – one is a Felt Hatters Firewoman and the other is a Felt hat trimmer. Henry’s son Ernest was my grandad.

Martha Wilday (any relation to Joseph the ‘hatman’?) born around 1849 married Benjamin Boulstridge. Their daughter Rosehiller married William Asbury Bown and their daughter Clara was my (nanna) grandmother.
