Dear Sirs,
1n 1829, my GGGrandfather, Joseph Warren, then resident in Abbey St, Nuneaton, was convicted (with seven others) and given a life sentence for firing a shot in the direction of the gamekeeper of Merevale Hall whilst being in the act of poaching pheasant on the Dugdale estate - (they got away with seven for dinner)!
He had to leave his wife and children and was sent to NSW, Australia, where he was indentured to Rev. Hassell south of Sydney. He was pardoned after 3 years and lived in Sydney until his death in1890 Aged 81.
I plan a visit to Atherstone from Australia in first week of November and would love to hear from locals!
Regards
John Staton

I am in Australia and will be visiting Atherstone in May of this year to do research on the Baxter family who have strong connections with both Atherstone and Mancetter. Dudley Baxter a solicitor in Atherstone at the end of the 19th Century is my husband’s great grandfather. I would appreciate it if anyone with information which may be useful to me could contact me via this page. Lynne Baxter

I have just discovered from the 1891 census that two of my Gt aunts were living at Chapel House, Market Place, Atherstone. One was a scholar aged 8 the other, aged 15 was ‘training to be a servant’. They were from London. Can you tell me what this establishment was, or how they may have come to be there.

Hi Dorothy,
You can find a small amount on information on Chapel house here,

“Chapel House was built in 1728 as the dower house to Atherstone Hall.”
