does anyone have any knoweldge of a samuel baker who came from atherstone area, i know he died around 1934 and is buried in bently grave yard. he was my grandad and i would like to know if i have any more relations.
Jacki,
You probably have relatives here in Atherstone. Looking at 1881 census I find Samuel aged 4 with his parents Thomas 31 & Lucy 31 in Bentley with siblings Matilda 6 and Ernest 1.In 1891 ( find on freecen) Samuel is 14, working as a coal miner & there are 2 more children, Athur 9, & Phoebe 6.
As mother is now 42 there were probably no further children. I am sure that some of these will have had families who are related to you. Have a look at the web site for Nuneaton & North Warwickshire Family History society.(www.NNWFHS.org) There is a list of members interests there. Perhaps a relative of yours is already searching for Samuel.
Contact me for further help.
Regards Val
Hi Valerie,
Thank you for the information, much appreciated. Its just the kind of exchange this website was set up to encourage. Email addresses aren’t shown publicly so I will pass your address to jacki myself.

hi val, thanks for info i am looking forward to finding out more as i have now moved to atherstone hoping to find more family here.
Very good to know the history of Atherstone. I am looking for any information on the Mottram family, my mothers side, who were farmers and also an innkeeper. Would there be a record somewhere of the inn? Any information very gratefully received.
I have a death certificate for Richard Broadley who may be one of my family. He died in Hand & Bottle Yard, Atherstone. I presume this was a Public House – can anyone confirm this. Is Janet Ferguson who was ‘present at death’ the publican? It could be that Richard was the father of John Broadley can anyone confirm this?
I am currently researching the Baxter family who lived in the Atherstone/Mancetter area for about two hundred years. They have connections with St. Mary’ church and St. Peter’s. And lived at 80 Long Street. My husband’s great grandfather Dudley Baxter was a solicitor. We will be visiting Atherstone in May of this year and would like to speak with anyone who can provide me with information on further avenues for research.
Lynne Baxter
Hi I noticed your comment on the Baxter family living in Atherstone. I am currently trying to find Rilles Baxter’s father, I think he is William Hall mother Mary ??.

Dear Jacki Ward
My name is Mike Ward I live in South Africa.
I am researching the Ward branch of my family and have traced it back as far as John William Ward born circa 1846/48 at Atherstone Mancetter. He married Eliza Nee Bassett who I think was from this area as well. As a baby and young child John William Ward lived with his grandmother Elizabeth Ward at Atherstone Mancetter she was born circa 1786 and was originally from Great Packington. Four of John William Ward’s sons immigrated to South Africa around 1895 and were pioneers on the Witwatersrand Goldfield. At that time John William Ward lived at Millom in Cumbria. Any information on John William Ward’s parents would be greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely Mike Ward
Does anyone have any information on a Sarah Robinson born in Atherstone in 1801. She may possibly have a relation called John Robinson. She married John White in Wolverhampton in 1822. Any information would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks
Chris
I am looking for any DEXTERs from the Atherstone/Mancetter area. Specifically I am researching for any information on a Joseph DEXTER born in about 1806. His son, my great great grandfather (Joseph DEXTER) was born in Atherstone in about 1840 (plus he was resident at Ramsey’s Court on Long Street in 1841). Joseph DEXTER (senior), born about 1806, was also from Warwickshire (the 1841 census lists him as a hatter from Warwickshire – there is no mention of Atherstone but this is my best guess).
Any information or steers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards, Rupert Dexter (www.dexterfamilytree.com)
I am researching the Bostock family from Atherstone. My Grandfather was born in Atherstone in 1882 as were his parents and 13 siblings. I will be visiting Atherstone in late July early August (from the states).

Thanks,
Randy B.

I am researching for a book on the families that settled Te Puke, near Tauranga, New Zealand. Two daughters of Stafford Stratton BAXTER of Atherstone settled here.
One was Agnes Emily BAXTER (1831-1911 Rotorua)who married Charles WILLMOTT and came to Te Puke in 1881. Their son Charles Dudley WILLMOTT served during World War One aged 50, and his son also served aged 17!
The other was Harriet Emma BAXTER (1833-1921 Auckland) who married mariner Captain Philip BENNETT and came to Te Puke around 1882. Their descendant Dudley VERCOE still lives in Te Puke.
To contact me please see my web site.

Sorry, forget to list John Mason and Sarah Thickbroom were married at Mancetter.
To Admin – I started a reply to Ann Reade re William and Sarah Ward when my PC threw a wobbly i.e. it suddenly began updating Windows, so I am starting again as below — I hope it works. If not please email me.
Hello, Ann Reade. William and Sarah Ward are my 3x great grandparents. William was born about 1770, he was a woolcomber; died 10.11.1843. Sarah was born about 1777, died 22.5.1865. On 1851 census, as head of household she was described as a pauper/nurse. Both of them were staunch Congregationalists and attended chapel very regularly. The minister who conducted Sarah’s funeral made a special entry in his records, including the Bible verse he used for his funeral oration. They were both buried in the small cemetery alongside the Congregational Chapel, North Street, on the east side of the Chapel, 3rd row, No. 1 grave from the school wall.
William Ward, widower, married Sarah Lewis, widow, on 29th August 1804 at St. Peter’s, Mancetter. As far as I know, their children were, from oldest to youngest :-
Sarah – married William Thomas Pountney
Mary – died as an infant aged 10 months
William – died aged 14
Mary Ann – Married John Pearson
Dan – married Charlotte Hall (my 2x ggparents)
Pheoby – married Will8iam Argrave (or Hargrave)
Sophia
I had found one illegitimate child for Mary Ann; David Ward born about 1829. On the 1841 census, aged 12, he was living with his grandparents and Dan and family. In 1851 he was with grandma Sarah and was acknowledged as her grandson. He married on 28th March 1853: on the marriage certificate his father’s name and occupation are crossed through, though his stepfather John Pearson signed as a witness.
Hope this is of interest to you. I f you wish to contact me via email, please do so.
I am researching my father’s family. My great-great-great-grandfather Joseph MELLAR was a tailor and draper in Atherstone from at least 1841 until he died in 1877. His brother John was transported to Australia in 1829 for poaching. His father John MELLAR who married Mary HOOD was a farmer. After John died Mary married her second husband Joseph HUBBARD and had a son William HUBBARD who became a solicitor.
I am researching my family tree, currently using the on-line Ancestry.co.uk census’s. I would now like to add some meat to the bones, what is the best way to do this. I live in Hartshill and most of the Thompson’s lived there according to the census returns. I have a copy of Joan Allen’s Heardreds Hill book and this has now roused an interest into the local history of the area. Can anyone advise on where I best go for information.
regards Alan

My earliest provable documented ancestor was George Willington (married to Ann and father of Thomas and John Willington) who was living in Mancetter in the 1740′s I am researching this family from here in Australia so I would really appreciate any local knowledge type suggestions on how I can best follow his ancestral line back a few more generations please?

This is for Teresa Lyons,
It might not be the same John Hatton, but I have researched my family tree and my great, great, great grandfather was John Hatton, who had a daughter named Mary (born Atherstone 1819). In 1842 he was listed as being a Shoemaker. Mary married Theophilus Muston in 1842 in Handsworth. Strangely enough the name Lyons is in my family tree on my Grandmothers side. Do the surnames names Genever/Mead mean anything to you?
This is for Teresa Lyons,
Further to my earlier posting, I think I’ve mislead you. Instead of the surnames Genever/Mead, now read Shelley (Sarah Elizabeth?).Other names I have are Bob Lyons,Bob Lyons again then sons Terry and Ray. Sorry if this has nothing to do with you, but if I don’t mention it we’ll never know. If these names ring any bells, the Mary Hatton you’re searching for could very well be the same one.
Regards.
Bob Pettis.
Thank you so much for all this information. How can I get your email add to thank you in person.
Kindest Regards Ann
hallo, does anyone have knowledge of a person of the first half of the 19.- century named peter carmichael from atherstone ? may he was born between 1810/1840. eventually he was a merchant with relations to Italy ? any information or steers in the right direction would be very much and greatly appreciated.
with kindly regards
githa
This is for Bob Pettis,
Thanks for your reply. My surname Lyons is my married name and my husbands family come from Dublin so probably there won’t be a match.
The John Hatton I am looking for married Eleanor Jebbit/Jebbett in 1821. Their daughter Mary Ann Hatton was born 1834.
John Hatton is recorded on the 1841 census as Hatter. On the 1861 he is recorded as a Innkeeper & farmer.
Sorry I can’t help you with the names you mentioned.
Thansk for looking Bob and good luck.
regards
Teresa
Any information regarding the MERCER family from Atherstone would be very helpful. I can trace back to a Richard MERCER (b. 1830) son of Richard and Sarah MERCER, but can get no further. Richard’s siblings were Charles (1833) Elizabeth (1827), joseph (1826) and Henry )1843
My husband’s family originated from Atherstone. His Great, Great Grandfather Henry Faulkner was born 1828 and he was the 3rd child of James Faulkner and Sarah Hatton. I believe James’ father was also called James and Sarah’s father was Joseph Hatton.
Can anyone give me any more information, please
I am also a Lyons. My grandfather is Bob- Robert Lyons, son of Edward and Mabel.
I am also looking for information on the Lyons side of the family. I do have some names and dates only as far back as my great great grandparents. I do not have much history beyond my own Grandfather Robert C. Lyons, so if anyone can help me with any information I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you. -melissa
DEXTER. My grandad was Thomas, wife lillian HOLLAND married 1915. children Megan, Lila, Gwen, Tom and Alf, any info appreciated. cheers
If the Thomas DEXTER you are looking for is Thomas Everitt DEXTER born in 1892 — then his parents are James DEXTER (1858-1912) and Hannah WYKES (1857 – 1934). I believe that all of the DEXTERs in Atherstone/Mancetter are related. I think that we are all descendants of Thomas DEXTER and Sarah HAYWOOD who married in Breedon on the Hill, LEI in 1807 and can be found living in Mancetter in the 1841 census. Hope this helps.
Rick

Anne Reade – Sorry for the long silence ! First me and then my computer were out of action. Glad that the William Ward info was helpful to you. For I think obvious reasons I am reluctant to publish my email address, but surely “admin” have something in their protocol which allows tham to pass it on privately, to which I have no objection. Anyway, glad to have been of help, as you have similarly helped me.
Alan Taylor – Many thanks for the info about Pheoby and William Hargrave. Would you believe that a relative of mine and family emigrated to Adelaide some 35 years ago ! A great country and a great city. Are there still Hargrave descendants there ?

The Clark family in Atherstone. Looking for any information regarding Clark’s in Atherstone, especially before 1860. Family was later involved in Glascote Colliery and Gibbs & Canning Terra Cotta Works in Tamworth. John Clark emigrated to America in 1880s and helped started the New York Architectural Terra Cotta Works. Believe he may have been born in Atherstone in the 1860s, but cannot find birth record. Parents’ names are unclear….
Does anyone know anything about James Miller, photographer? He used to specialise in portraits but did slide shows from his house at Hill Top, Long Street. Any pictures or adverts from his studio please.

Theophilus Thickbroom is a direct ancestor of mine (my mother’s maiden name is Thickbroom), I only just discovered him last night when upodating the family tree that I am working on on Genes Reunited! If you wish to see what I have so far then I am happy to share info with you. Perhaps you have data I can use to fill in gaps on my tree, I am interested to know how you are related to him, it would be good if I could find out who some of the women on that side of the family married as I can’t get that info off the census’s. Looking forward to hearing from you

Chris Egan,
Hello. There used to be a building known as “tollgate cottage” on the corner of the junction of Coleshill Road with the road leading to Ridge Lane. Since it is a good few years since I left Atherstone, I do not have up to date info. If you call up the OS map – in particular between Monks Park Wood and the Outwoods – there is a plot of land outlined on that corner which is where the “tokllgate cottage that I know was situated.
Hope this has been of some help.
Hello.
I have been searching for information on my great grandfather John Ealing/Healing from Atherstone born 1824 married 1864 to Frances/Fanny Clark shown on the 1871 census as living in whitby yard Atherstone

John Ealing was my Great Great Grandad. John and Francis’ son William, who is shown on the workhouse records moved to Chapel End and had 11 children, including my grandfather Frank. my grand parents and family were from cross keys yard
what is it you are seeking= relatives
For Theresa: Joseph Wood (who married Mary Ann Haddon) and had the children you mentioned, was the son of Mark Wood and Emma nee Boonham. I am a descendant of Mark Wood and his first wife Elizabeth nee Boonham (sister of Emma above). Believe Joseph Wood died in 1909 but didn’t find the family in the 1891 census. Will keep looking. Have heaps on the Woods going back from Mark, also his brother’s children, most of whom came to New Zealand.
Found my great grandmother’s birth certificate. Born 18 Sept 1845, Harriet, father John Gisbourne, mother Hannah Boyard (born abt.1811 resident Mancetter parish, lived Mousleys yard 1841 census on own – ribbon weaver). John Gisbourne born abt.1820 The House, Hall Lane, Atherstone. They were married 1842. Does anyone know anything about these people?
Hi,
I have a William Gisbourne born 1832 married Jane Smith b1832 had several children one of which was George Leonard Gisbourne born 1867 died spring 1940.
Does this tie in with any of your research?
Mike
For janet miller can you get in touch with me my email is theresa.wright@live.co.uk
My great(x3)grandfather Robert Tweed died in Atherstone in 1863, on his death certificate his occupation was ‘a post boy for an inn’. My understanding is that a post boy would have been responsible for making ready a change of horses for an in-coming mail coach. Stage coaches had long disappeared, by this date horse drawn ‘vans’ were being used. Atherstone must have been an important stage along the main London road; Which Inns were the major Long Street ‘Coaching Inns’in 1860.
For Alan Taylor or Paddy Ward -
Hello- I believe that my Great grandfather Edwin was William (Phoebe) Hargraves brother. Edwins son Sydney Dent Hargrave (my grandfather) moved to Canada in 1920′s. My mother was born in Flecknoe. I would love to hear about other Hargrave relatives – Atherstone, or Adelaide.
Hello David,
If you contact me via http://www.nnwfhs.org.uk I can give you contact email for the Hargrave researchers in Queensland and S. Australia. The first (?) Hargrave to emigrate was Catherine Hargrave, dau. of John & Catherine. I think William Hargrave was her nephew or brother. She went to the Brisbane area, arriving in 1849. Her descendants are still there.
There is a gravestone in Sheepy Rd cemetary Atherstone for Edwin & his wife Rosa (Dent). Can take photo.
regards V.Pickard
Hello
My 3rd great grandfather was Thomas Pinchbeck (Pinchback) who was born in Atherstone circa 1795. He was a clockmaker, married Elizabeth Ball at Aston in 1821 and moved to Nottingham, before moving back to Birmingham between 1834 and 1837. He died in Birmingham in 1876, I can’t find any record of him living in Atherstone, he always names it as his place of birth on the censuses. Can anyone give me information about his antecedents?

http://www.familysearch.org has 3 entries for a baptism of a George Fox on 7th Nov. 1765 at Mancetter. This is not from church records. Each entry has been made by a member of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. He is the son of Ann Fox and George Baker.

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I’m trying to find information about my grandfather’s family. His name was Leonard Cheney and he was born in Atherstone in 1925, and I know that his mother’s maiden name was Bennett. From some research I’ve done, I THINK his parents were Edgar W. Cheney and Florence E. Bennett. If this is correct, then they moved to Atherstone sometime after 1913 when they were married in Stoke-on-Trent. I don’t know if they had other children, or if they eventually moved somewhere else. If on the off-chance anyone has any information on this family, I would love to hear it!
Am researching my family tree and have found out that my great grandmothers’ father ran the Old Swan back in 1800s. Would you have any information. His name was Broadbent.
THanks,Lois
Lois,
In the Pigot’s Directory of 1835 a William Broadbent is licencee. He was not there in a directory of 1829 or in later directories.
I failed to find him in 1841 or 1851 census. In 1861 there is a William Broadbent aged 74, a farmer in Witherley, 18 acres ( not big).
Witherley is next village but over the county border in Leicestershire. This Willam was born Atherstone. The name is not common so he is probably the same one that had the Old Swan in 1835.
His wife may have been Mary Avins. They had several sons & 4 daughters, Hannah, Mary, Ann & Eliza. Any of these fit?
The above found on http://www.familysearch.org and freebmd, and my own collection of trade directories.
regards Valerie.
I am researching my family and would appreciate any information on the family of Ada Olivia Fox born 1864 in Atherstone. She married William Henry Gilliver and immigrated to New Zealand. Her parents names and any history would be appreciated.
Hello I am trying to assist my mother Cynthia (nee Webster) born 1940 whose Mother Daisy Herp lived in long street Atherstone and her father lived at 9 Veros Terrace Station Rd Atherstone. I am searching information about her family as her Mother Daisy Webster (nee Herp) died in 1940 the year Cynthia webster was born and her father Herbert Webster died in 1951 he was a coal minner. Daisy Herp and Herbert Webster married and lived at 60 Westwood Rd Atherstone – there were 10 children Cynthia (youngest) Alan Gladys Eunice Betty etc.
I understand that Daisy Herp(married name webster) had two sisters Annie and Gladys (Herp) Any history or information would be very much appreciated.
On the 1901 census, in Vero’s yard were the family of Thomas Earp 36 a felt hat finisher, his wife Amelia Elizabeth 35, Dau Ellen Elizabeth 13, dau. Frances Lily 10, son Thomas William 7,son Harry Eaton 3, dau. Daisy Tugela aged 1.
Amelia had been a Holland before their marriage in 1885. Everyone born Atherstone. Am fascinated by middle name of Tugela. Found on Freebmd birth registrations. Other sisters must have been born after 1901.
VALERIE PICKARD – Hello Valerie – Thank you so much for the information about Daisy Earp and family. I have only just started looking for information this week (new to this) so I am delighted that you were able to help. It was a lovely shock!
Daisy Tugela (known as Tregelia) for the last 70 years has only come to light this week. Cynthia (nee Webster) Daughter of Daisy Tugela was one when Daisy died aged 40 in 1940.
We only knew about her two sisters Doris May born 1903 and Gladys May born 1905 – I managed to find Daisy, Doris Annie and Gladys today on the Atherstone Baptisms – 1875-1914. Also only discovered freebmd today and was able to cross reference Amelia E Holland (aka minnie) with Thomas Earp.. Married 1885. Now have to pass on this information to an excited Cynthia – daughter of daisy webster (nee) Earp. Can you hep with any information regarding their graves etc. The name Tugela is a mystery – we would love to know more.
Many many thanks – Karen
It was Daisy Earp (spelling) who lived at 9 Veros Terrace station rd – who married Herbert Webster of Long Street – then lived in Westwood Rd – any information about Daisy Earp would be welcome. Thank you
Can anyone help with any information about the location of the graves of Daisy Tugela Webster 1900-1940 and Herbert Webster death 1951 (age abt 54) of Atherstone – Many Thanks Karen
Googling Tugela I found that it is a place in S. Africa, near to Ladysmith.
Looking on freebmd for its use as a forename there are non 1850-1899.
Lots of little Tugela’s registered in 1900, thereafter the use tails off until 1935.
A couple even became Tugela with Ladysmith as a middle name.
So I guess Daisy had a relative who had been at Ladysmith? Nice bit of research for you to look at.
Happy hunting.
Daisy and Herbert Webster are both buried at Sheepy Road Cemetary, Atherstone.
So is Amelia Elizabeth Earp.
You can contact me through http://www.nnwfhs.org.uk for further details.
Valerie Pickard – Once again – Thank you so much with your help.
This is a large family tree to follow – but I am learning some new tools and skills and the thrill of discoverering more information is so exciting.

Also – Thank you so much for the information about Tugela – I will do my best to find out the South Africa Ladysmith link – ?
Know one in Cynthia (nee Webster’s) – (Daisys Daugther) family knows anything to help with this, there are only 3 children of Daisy left now. But once again THANK YOU for your time and help. This information means so much and if you don’t mind I would like to make contact with you on the e.mail you have provided. Can someone help me please? My great grandmother lived in Atherstone and married George Fleming in 1863. Her name was Alice Peake. Are there any members of the family still living there and what did the Peake family do? My great grandfather was a vet. Many thanks Margaret
I’m trying to link my g grandmother Rilles Hall to Rilles Baxter married 1852 to Joseph Arms Atherstone. There has to be a connection! I’d appreciate any help.
At the time of the 1861 census Alice Peake, 17, was living at the east end of Long St Atherstone in a large house which is still there. Her stepfather was William Oakden, wine & spirit merchant. She & her sister Lucy Ann were described as daughter in law which was an old term for step daughter. In a later census Lucy is still there, this time described as stepdaughter. Their mother was Ann who married William Oakden in 1847 in Market Bosworth. ( Freebmd) She died between 1861 and 1871.
She should be on the 1841 census with her first husband, possibly John Peake.
Valerie
Looking for Peake’s in trade directories of the town, in 1791 William Peake is an ironmonger and in 1822,1829, 1835 Thomas and John Peake are grocers, tea and hop dealers in Long Street. In the trade directory for 1850 there are no Peake’s trading.
Hello,
I am trying to find out any information on Mary Thomas bn 1794 Mancetter, Warwickshire.
I think Mary Thomas may of mrd John Baraclough also of Mancetter?
Looking for any kind of information on her parents
Kind Regards,
Irene Cooper.
According to familysearch.org a Mary Thomas married John Baraclough, Mancetter on 25/12/1811.
On the 1851 census they are living in Aston, nr Birmingham. John a 59 yr old carpenter, born in Nuneaton & Mary, 57, born Atherstone. In 1794 Mancetter church would have been used by Atherstone folks.
A James Thomas & his wife Ann christened 3 daughters Mary there between 1781 and Mary Ann in 1794.The first 2 Mary’s must have died as babies. To confirm that this is the correct Mary the church records need to be seen.
But I would guess that James & Ann were her parents.
Hi,
I have been tracing my family tree for the past couple of years now and have made a connection with my maternal grandfather with a family from Atherstone.
His name was George Henry Holland b. 1903 in the town. He was the son of George & Ada Holland, the eldest of nine children: Ada, Elsie, Bertie, Amy, Sidney, William, Ernie & James. They were connected to the family firm of Builders “Holland & Son” who were situated on Long Street in the town.
I would be interested in discovering if there are any more family members still living in the area? My Grandfather – known as Harry to his friends – died in 1954 and there are no surviving photographs of him or any other members of his family and these are what I am mainly keen to discover.
If you, or any of your readers, could be of ANY help to me in my quest, I would be eternally grateful.
